A Strategy Studio · Brooklyn · Est. 2017

A studio built on the idea that the breakthrough is often the shape you refused to redraw.

Mental Escher began in a third-floor walk-up on Main Street with two strategists, a roll of butcher paper, and an argument: that most strategy work fails not because teams lack ideas, but because they cannot see the frame they are stuck inside. Eight years later, fourteen senior strategists work from the same block in Brooklyn, drawing impossible objects for the people who hire them.

Chapter One · The Founding

Brooklyn, 2017: two strategists, one impossible staircase.

Mental Escher was founded in 2017 by two senior strategists — one out of IDEO's New York office, the other from Pentagram — who had spent the better part of a decade watching brilliant teams ship the wrong answer with conviction. The decks were clean. The research was thorough. The strategy was sound. And still, six months later, the same team would call back, stuck in the same place, having moved nothing that mattered.

The pattern, they came to believe, was not laziness and not lack of talent. It was the frame itself — the assumed shape of the problem that no one in the room was allowed to redraw. IDEO taught them to prototype past the obvious. Pentagram taught them that a single, well-drawn diagram can move a room faster than a forty-page report. Mental Escher was the studio that combined those two instincts and pointed them at strategy: the place where the shape of the problem gets redrawn before the answer gets built.

The name is not a metaphor the studio outgrew. It is the working method. An impossible object — a staircase that climbs forever, a waterfall that feeds itself, a hand that draws itself — only resolves once you accept a different set of rules. So does a strategy problem. The Escher Session is a structured hour in which the studio redraws the rules of a problem so the obvious next move becomes visible. The move the team could not see for months, sometimes for years.

They opened on Main Street because the rent was honest and the light was good. They stayed because the work kept arriving from places they did not expect: a founder in Lagos, a product VP in Seoul, a research lead in São Paulo. As of 2024, the studio has delivered 1,247 Escher Sessions across 38 countries. The Brooklyn walk-up has been replaced by a proper office at 45 Main Street. The butcher paper is still on the wall.
